Visual Arts Beginning

Syllabus

This course introduces students to the basic concepts of art. Through a series of demonstrations followed by hands-on projects, students will create original artworks in a variety of media and styles, including pencil and ink, pastel, watercolor, collage, and printmaking. To increase the students' perceptive ability, and expand their understanding of stylistic diversity, the history of Western and non-Western art will be studied. Composition, fundamentals of design, color theory, and questions such as "What is art?" will be explored. Sketchbooks and out-of-class assignments are required. Prerequisite for all other art classes unless students pass a portfolio review and are exempt.

Advanced Studio Art I

Syllabus

In this year-long honors course, students will further develop their skills and personal style through an in-depth exploration of several mediums. Experimentation, originality, craftsmanship, and understanding of the formal design principles are stressed. In the second semester, students will be expected to work independently, and to design and execute their own projects with a minimum supervision by the instructor. Twice-monthly class critiques, written self-evaluations, and peer evaluations will help students develop a more critical understanding of their artwork. Grading is by portfolio. Sketchbook and out-of-class assignments are required. Prerequisite: Portfolio review or one or more of the following courses: Introduction to Studio Art, Painting, Printmaking, or 3D Design II

Advanced Studio Art II

Syllabus
Instructor: Mr. Puckett

In this year-long honors course, students are expected to work independently at an advanced level, creating original artwork in their choice of painting media. Instruction is on an individual basis, although there will be some whole class assignments aimed at furthering painting, drawing and compositional skills. Twice-monthly class critiques, written self-evaluations, and peer evaluations will help students develop a more critical understanding of their artwork. Students in this class will be expected to mat and frame some of their artworks, both for critiques and competitions. Grading is by portfolio. Sketchbook and out-of-class assignments are required. This is a portfolio building class for AP Art. Prerequisite: Advanced Studio Art I

AP Drawing

Syllabus
Instructor: Mr. Puckett

This course is designed to address a broad interpretation of drawing issues and media. Light and shade, line quality, rendering of form, composition, surface manipulation, and illusion of depth are drawing issues that will be addressed. A variety of mediums including mixed media, printmaking, observational and abstract drawing will be explored. It is expected that students enrolled in this course must prepare and submit a portfolio to the AP Visual Arts Committee of the College Board for college credit approval. Prerequisite: Open to Juniors and Seniors with at least 1.5 credits of high school art. Instructor recommendation required.

AP 2D Design

Syllabus
Instructor: Ms. Mann

AP Studio Art 2D is a college-level course focusing on two-dimensional (2D) applications such as painting, collage, graphics, photography, and fibers. As the name suggests, the focus of the course is on learning to create successful design in the student's chosen medium. In the course, students are encouraged to work independently with a minimum of instructor supervision. The emphasis is on learning to understand art as an ongoing process of informed and critical decision making. Students will prepare a portfolio showing proficiency in two areas defined by the College Board (1) Sustained investigation of 15 works in a particular visual interest or problem; and (2) 5 selected portfolio pieces of the student's best work, including formal, technical, and expressive concerns. According to the College Board, "AP Studio Art: 2D Design is for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art." Prerequisite: Only open to Juniors and Seniors who have taken at least 1.5 credits of high school art. Instructor recommendation required.

AP 3D Design

This is a college level course focusing on 3D applications such as clay, wood, assemblage, relief and in-the-round sculpture. As the name suggests the course is focused on design concepts as applied to sculpture. Students will create a portfolio showing proficiency in the two areas as defined by the College Board (1) Sustained investigation of 15 works in a particular visual interest or problem; and (2) 5 selected portfolio pieces of the student's best work. AP 3D design is for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art. Prerequisite: Only open to Juniors and Seniors who have taken at least 1.5 credits of high school art. Instructor recommendation required.

AP Art History

Syllabus
Instructor: Ms. Alexander

This college level course provides an in-depth history of both Western and non-Western art from the Paleolithic through the Modern period. It is covers the same material as an introductory college course in art history, and will cover architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within their historical and cultural contexts. In the course, students learn to look at works of art critically, with intelligence and sensitivity, and to articulate what they see or experience. No prior exposure to art or art history is required. However, students who have done well in other courses in the humanities, such as history and literature, or in any of the studio arts are especially encouraged to enroll. Prerequisite: 10th-12th Grade
